April 30 - May 4

English Lit/ English Comp

Good afternoon,

This week students will continue to work through The Outsiders.  In lit, we will continue to read/discuss the book.  We will have a reading quiz after we finish chapter 10 and another reading quiz when we finish chapter 12.  We should finish the book by the end of the week.  After finishing the book, we will watch the movie and compare and contrast both mediums.

In comp, we will begin working on a mock trial.  We will go through the preliminary information this week and pick roles.

I have really enjoyed looking through the news reports, reward posters,  and "Fakebook" projects.  "Fakebook" grades and news grades will be posted by Wednesday.

The Outsiders: Nothing Gold Can Stay TedEd assignment

Watch The Outsiders: Nothing Gold Can Stay

Think: Answer the questions

Dig Deeper: Explore the additional resources

Discuss this passage with a partner:

Take a look at the excerpt from The Outsiders. Discuss the questions that follow!
Listen, I don't mind dying now. It's worth it. It's worth saving their kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for. Some of their parents came by to thank me and I know it was worth it. (12.64) Is Johnny right? Can we say if one human life is worth more than another? Are the lives of five children worth more than the life of one teenage Johnny? And is that even a fair question?

Write a a paragraph (consisting of at least 5 sentences) that answers the discussion questions.  Make sure to address all parts.

And finally....
What is your overall impression of the book The Outsiders thus far? Is it truly a timeless piece of literature?

April 16 - April 20

English Lit/ English Comp

We aren't going to have any homework or tests this week because of PSSA math testing.  We have begun reading The Outsiders.  All reading will be done in class.  So far the students seem to be enjoying the novel.  We will have a reading quiz after every 2 chapters.  We will also complete vocabulary, video journals, reading questions, and various projects as we move through the book.

The English Language Arts Pennsylvania State School Assessment (PSSA) seemed to be a huge success.  Students were motivated to do their best.  They were very happy with the parent messages on Tuesday, the cookies on Wednesday, and the tootsee rolls on Thursday.  They went into the test each day with a smile on their faces and a positive attitude.  They seem very confident in their work.  I just wanted to share a few pictures from the past few days.  Thank you for making this year's ELA test a success!

April 9 - April 13

English Comp / English Lit

Good afternoon,

There isn't too much to report this week since students will be testing most of the time.  We are going to be playing some games that review the content that we have covered thus far.  Next week we will move forward with the curriculum.  There will be no tests/homework this week.

If you haven't sent in a message for your student, there is still time to do so.  Just send me an email with the subject PSSA, identify your student in the body, and write your message.  Below you will see a picture of what I have been doing with the messages.  The students are in for a nice surprise tomorrow : )  Thank you for your participation!

Have a great week!
