December 17 - December 21

ELA 7

*Please note that students dismiss at 11:00 on Friday.

This week students will be watching A Christmas Carol and comparing and contrasting the filmed and written versions.  Students are responsible for creating a graphic organizer and taking notes throughout the movie.  When we come back from Christmas break, students will use their notes to write an essay comparing and contrasting the two.

*Characters Individual Session" is due on Wednesday.  Students will be allotted class time to work on this assignment.  Throughout the first act of the play, students studied the characters and discussed character traits and motivation.  This assignment takes that a step further because it requires students to analyze character independently.

I would like to wish all of my students and their families a happy holiday season!  Guardians, thank you for all of your support; students, thank you for all of your hard work!  I'm proud of all that we have accomplished in 2018, and I hope that 2019 yields continued success.

Have a great week!

November 27 - November 30

ELA 7

This week we will be wrapping up "Danger!  This Mission to Mars Could Bore You to Death!"  Students reread the story today and did a written analysis using the ICE (introduce, cite, explain) method.  The selection test is on Friday.  Please make sure that your student studies throughout the week.  The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is often referred to as "silly season," and some students need an extra push to keep them going in the right direction.

"Text Structure Individual Session" is due on Thursday.  Students had about 30 minutes to work on it during class today.  All students should strive to earn a 100% between now and the due date.

Last week we completed an escape room based on the short story "The Landlady."  The students had a lot of fun!

They won again!

Students in my 5th/6th period brought in decorations and decorated the classroom for the holiday season on the early dismissal before break.  Thank you to Michael Spotts and Mekenzie Evans for coordinating this effort!  The room looks great!

Have a great week!

November 19 - November 23

ELA 7

*Please note that there is an early dismissal on Wednesday, and no school Thursday-Monday.

The snow days really derailed my plans!  I am going to put "Danger!  This Mission to Mars Could Bore You to Death!" on hold until after Thanksgiving break.  It is relatively short, so we will reread when we get back and go from there.

Students will review plot on Monday and complete the Study Island individual session.  This assignment is due on Wednesday.  Students have an unlimited number of attempts on this assignment.  Please urge your student to strive for a 100%.

Back by popular demand is the escape room!  Students will read/annotate a short story called "The Landlady," and complete a set of challenges that correspond with the selection.

Have a great week!

October 15 - October 19

ELA 7

This week students will continue to work through the content that corresponds with the excerpt from An Invisible Thread.  Students will practice with coordinate and cumulative adjectives, analyze narrative point of view, and use roots and affixes to determine the meaning of words.

*"Roots and Affixes Individual Session" is due on Wednesday.  As always, students may complete this activity as many times as they wish in order to earn a higher score

*The Slip or Trip written report is due on Wednesday

On Wednesday, students will participate in "Quotation Stations."  Students will learn about different methods for properly integrating quotations and practice this skill at each station.  As a culminating activity, students will answer questions 1, 2, 4, 5 from the analysis section of their textbooks and use at least 2 methods of blending quotes.

*The An Invisible Thread test is on Friday.  Students received a study guide last week.  An additional copy of the study guide/additional practice can be found in my post from last week and/or in the weekly update email from last week.

Have a great week!
