The topics covered this week are: informative writing (text structure), vocabulary (chronic, stimulus, subconsciously, excruciatingly, monotony, and catastrophic), and conventions (action verbs and linking verbs).

This week students will create resumes.  Later in the week, they'll learn about the importance of effective speaking and listening in an interview and begin to prepare for their mock interviews.

This week we'll take a test on the story version and radio play version of "Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed."  Students will complete a study guide during class on Tuesday and take the test on Thursday.  Use the Google Docs link to access the study guide.

We'll also begin working on the performance-based assessment.  It consists of an argumentative piece about whether or not we should make a home in space.

This week, students will be comparing a written story to its written radio play version, analyzing the effects of techniques unique to each medium.

Students will analyze the parts of a pay stub and learn about various deductions.  Students will also learn about getting along with an employer and handling difficult situations.

There will be no homework this week unless a student fails to finish his work during class.

Students will continue with the argumentation unit this week while working simultaneously with the textbook.  We will cover pages 141-148.  The topics will include figurative language, vocabulary, and adjectives.

We will review for midterms on Thursday.  Our midterm will be held on January 17, 2017.

This week we will be discussing benefits such as health insurance, sick days, vacation days, personal days, retirement, etc.  We'll also cover putting in effort on the job and handling difficult situations appropriately.

January 3 - January 7

English- Periods 1, 4, 6, & 8

There will be no homework outside of class this week unless a student fails to complete his/her work during the allotted class time.

This week students will pretend to be police investigators.  They will analyze a crime scene in order to gather evidence to be included in a piece of argumentative writing.  Students will learn about the basic parts of an argument (evidence, warrant, backing, and counterargument).  Students will be required to use these elements in their "police reports."

Students will also continue to work on "Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed."  Students will analyze the craft and structure of the text.


Career Exploration Periods 3 & 7

Students will continue learning about finances and working on budgets.
