Cereal Commercials Using Appeals

As some of you may know, students had to create cereal commercials this week using appeals to reason, appeals to authority, or appeals to reason.  They did a great job, so I thought that I would share some of them with you.  Enjoy!

Feb 26 - March 2

English Lit / Comp

Students will continue to work through Al Gore's Nobel Speech this week.  Our test on the selection will not be until the middle or end of next week.

Over the next few days, students will be engaged in a project that requires them to effectively use persuasion.  Students are creating a cereal, designing a box, and making a commercial that contains either appeals to emotion, appeals to authority, or appeals to reason.  These are elements of effective persuasive pieces.  Examples of these techniques can be found in Al Gore's Nobel Speech.  For more information about these techniques, see page 384 in the textbook.  Students are presenting the final product on Wednesday.

We will also be working on text structure.  We will cover cause and effect, compare and contrast, inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, and chronological order.  The Study Island assignment on "Text Structure is due on Thursday.

February 5 - February 9

Lit/ Comp

It is difficult to say what we will get done this week because of yesterday's cancellation and the impending storm.  Cancellations or not, the Study Island topics "Meaning and Tone" and "Sound and Structure" are due on Friday.

Students are writing an essay in response to the following prompt: Authors often use sound and structure to convey meaning in poetry.  How does Poe use sound and structure to create meaning in "The Bells"?

I cannot give a due date for the essay assignment yet.  I want to wait and see what happens Wednesday and Thursday.  Students will work on the essay in class with a partner.  They must hand in a graphic organizer (bug) with their final copy.
