March 11 - March 15

Cereal commercials are due today (Monday) for periods 4/5 and 7/8.  Commercials for period 1/2 are due on Wednesday.  I will be posting some of the commercials on my blog throughout the week.

The Nobel Speech text dependent analysis essay is due on Friday.  We will work on the essay during class throughout the week.

The Nobel Speech selection test is on Friday.  Students received a study guide last week.  We are going to spend the week preparing for the test.

Parent Homework

Hello,

I have some homework the parents/guardians this week.  As you may be aware of, ELA PSSA testing is April 15, 16, and 17 this year.  These days can be long and/or unpleasant for students.  I like to do things the week of testing to make the experience a little more positive for them and ease their stress/anxiety.

One of the things that I like to do is give them notes of encouragement from their parents/guardians on the first morning of testing.  You would be surprised how much it means to students to get a positive message from a parent or guardian.  If you follow the link and fill out the google form, I will print your message, attach a treat, and deliver it to your student on the morning of testing to brighten his/her day.

February 25 - March 1

ELA 7

Students will take the Silent Spring selection test on Tuesday.  

Following the selection test, students will move into the next round of benchmark testing.  Over half the students in my classes scored advanced last time around!  I was very impressed!  I hope to see growth since the last time we benchmarked in December.  

After we wrap up benchmarking, students will read a Nobel Speech by Al Gore.  Students will learn how to evaluate arguments and how to make their own arguments more persuasive.

February 18-February 22

ELA 7

This week students will continue to work on the excerpt from Silent Spring.  We covered comprehension and analysis last week, so we will focus more on conventions, vocabulary, and craft and structure this week.  

We are going to complete a text dependent analysis essay during class.  Students will complete the graphic organizer on Monday and write one paragraph per day.  I will be conferencing with students each day and providing feedback.  The essay is due at the end of the double class period on Friday.  Click on the link to view a copy of the assignment.

As of now I'm going to plan on having the selection test on Friday; however, the date may change depending on the weather.  Students have a copy of the study guide.  Additional copies, additional practice, and the additional practice answer key can be obtained by scrolling down on my blog or from last week's email update.  

In addition to working on the selection and the TDA, students will have time to work on their Study Island assignments.

January 21 - January 25

ELA 7

This week has been a nightmare in terms of planning.  Because of the snow day, 2 hour delay, early dismissal, and internet outage, my plans have been completely and totally derailed.  We are just going to play things by ear for the next two days.  Our time will be spent going over the concepts that will appear on the test.

*The "Thank You, M'am" selection test will be on Monday.  See my previous post for the study guide/additional practice.

Last Friday, students completed a "Thank You, M'am" escape room challenge.  Students were tasked with completing a plot diagram, defining words using context clues, determining text structure, and identifying literary terms.  Everyone did a great job!
